I Am Definitely an Obama Girl
Examining some of the many news stories recently about the Obamas as the First Family, share with me and the class some observations about how their example both challenges and reinforces our ideas of family and black family life. How can we view them as inspiring us all to be better husbands and wives, (grand)mothers and fathers, (grand)daughters and sons? How can we also use the Obamas as a model for the responsibilities that all families have, no matter what their size or financial condition, to contribute positively to the neighborhoods where they live, and to truly help and relate to others, whether they are of a different religion, speak a different language, or even live in a different neighborhood?

The Obamas have not only begun to present a positive image for black families in America, but it also represents being a great example for other black families. Besides seeing the Huxtables on the Cosby Show, it shows that yes this type of family life is probable for blacks to maintain. I also love how even though the Obama's have aquired this new lifestyle, they have tried to maintain as much of a normal life as possible. They have not let the all the glitz and glam override their true purpose for their presence at 1600 Pen. Ave. and they absolutley have not changed any aspects of their culture for the sake of trying to conform to the standards of the other families to occupy the house. I loved the fact for the first party, they had Earth, Wind, and Fire perform! They are managing to do what most have not, maintain their beliefs and show D.C. that a new crew has come to town!!!
ReplyDeleteThe Obama's give America hope and show people of every color how to live life responsibly and respectably. You see the poise and dignity that the President and his family bring to society and it is truly amazing. His family shows us that every neighborhood in every state across the country can better themselves if they just work for it. that is what our nation is based on working hard. And the Obama's prove that if you work for things you will get great results. Hopefully the people of our country will use this motivation to make the country a better place by working together.
ReplyDeleteKayla, I agree--EWF playing the White House just blows me away, and of course, makes me wish I could have been there! I am slowly acquiring The Cosby Show episodes on DVD, and also hoping that all the seasons of A Different World will also be made available; whenever I watch them, I fall in love with black culture all over again--the way the characters dress, the way they talk, the way they relate to each other and to the world is just so powerful, so uplifting, and so REAL, when so little about black people in the movies or on TV is anymore! I was in grad school when A Different World was on the air, and my friends and I used to get together to watch an hour of Black World on Thursday nights. It helped us survive, and it inspired me to actually take a job at Spelman College. I think everyone should see these shows.
ReplyDeleteThe Obamas present a positive image of the Black Family. They set standards we could follow and learn from so that we could improve our own family structures.
ReplyDeleteIn today's society, most of the times African American families are labeled as deficient and dysfunctional; where there is no father figure in the home and single mothers are left to raised their children on their own. However, the Obamas put a different perspective on how African American family is portrayed, by showing intelligence, leadership qualities and love for each other.
They are role models and gives us all hope, not just in America, but around the world.
During the inauguration season I was watching BET, a reporter was interviewing people on the street and a young Black man said that he never think about marriage, but when he saw the Obamas, he wanted to get married and have children. This is the imapact that the Obamas are making in the Black community, and I'm loving it!
